New Department of Biostatistics

Donald Berry, one of the world's foremost mathematical statisticians and applied biostatisticians, will be joining M. D. Anderson Cancer Center on September 1, 1999. Dr. Berry will be coming from Duke University to chair a newly founded Department of Biostatistics. The Department will consist of approximately 15 faculty and 20 statistical analysts who will be responsible for a large program of collaborative cancer research. This research will involve the design and analysis of clinical and prevention trials as well as translational and basic research studies. A primary focus of the department will be the development of new methodology in designing and analyzing data from clinical trials. This will include methods for survival analysis, Bayesian monitoring strategies for clinical trials, improvements for screening studies, better dose finding strategies, using surrogate endpoints, meta-analysis, etc. The Department's members will be involved in an important way from the inception to the completion of each research endeavor. In particular, they will be responsible for study design, interim monitoring, final analysis and reporting of results to the investigators and for publication.

Proposed initiatives for the Department of Biostatistics include a graduate program in the University of Texas system and a Center for Innovation in Clinical Research. The latter will be a collaborative venture involving academia, the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, and governmental agencies. It will house visiting faculty and post-doctoral fellowships. Members of the Department will be involved in these initiatives to the extent that their interests dictate.
