Committee on Women in Statistics

Submitted by: Carolee Bush Date: January 2001

Number of meetings held: one

Dates held: August 13, 2000

Approximate number attending the meeting: 20 (including guests)

Please summarize, briefly, major issues discussed and/or accomplishments:

Accomplishments in 2000

1. Holly Schulman and COWIS, along with several other ASA Committees and organizations, again organized and co-sponsored with the Caucus for Women in Statistics a reception and session targeted for first-time attendees at the JSM. Over 60 people attended the activity. Three speakers provided insights on getting the most out of attending the JSM meetings.

2. Pat Wozniak, Cox Scholarship Chair, announced Gertrude Cox Scholarship winners Elizabeth Stuart, Miena Meek, and Andrea Nibbe. Twenty-nine women applied for the scholarship. Holly Schulman will serve as Chair next year.

3. Stephanie Shipp successfully secured eligibility for ASA and the Gertrude Cox Scholarship Fund to participate in the Fall 2000 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for the first time ever.

4. Following up on Dan Kasprzyk's report from last year, he noted that there continues to be a problem with the numbers reported for ASA Fellows. He will meet with a member of the ASA Fellows Committee to clarify the data and report back.

5. The COWIS invited session for ASA 2000 on "Inclusion of Women in Clinical Trials" organized by Huey Ju was well attended.

6. Lynn Palmer organized an invited session for ASA 2001 on "Interpreting Health Policy and Outcomes using Bayesian Methodology". Lynn Kelly will organize next year's session.

7. Gender and demographic information continue to be a priority for COWIS. Stephanie Shipp and Carolee Bush continue to clarify and pursue with ASA.

8. The project on women's participation at the 1999 JSM meetings was not completed in time to update our yearly and cumulative progress reports. New member Jiann-Ping Hsu, with help from Lynn Palmer, volunteered to do the 2000 report and include the 1999 data.

9. President-Elect Miron Straf attended our JSM committee meeting and talked about his future goals for ASA.

Plans for 2001

1. Write more Amstat articles on COWIS activities including Cox scholarship winners.

2. Continue to monitor and report participation of women at the JSM.

3. Submit proposed invited session for 2002 JSM.

4. Renew Gertrude Cox CFC Designation; report on contributions.

5. Take a proactive approach to encouraging more nominations of women as ASA Fellows.

6. Continue with the ASA Fellows' Report.

7. Continue to update COWIS website and add more links.

8. Continue to work with the CAUCUS and other organizations on the new members'reception and session.
